Barrington, IL

Barrington, IL, is an upscale village about 30 miles Northwest of Chicago. It has a population of almost 10,500, and the area is woodsy with parks, forest preserves, wetlands and horse trails. Barrington is part of the Chicago Metro Area and one of the wealthiest suburbs in America.

History

The Barrington area was initially home to the Potawatomi, Chippewa and Ottawa Native American tribes. By treaty in 1833, 5,000,000 acres west of Lake Michigan and east of the Mississippi River were ceded to the United States by the Native Americans in exchange for $100,000 in annuities and grants.

Pioneers from New York and Vermont began settling the area in 1834, a lumber facility opened for business in 1855, and by 1863, there was a population of 300. The oldest buildings in Barrington were made of brick and stone to protect them against fire, and many are still standing today. In 1929, the Jewel Tea Company erected a new facility near Barrington that provided hundreds of jobs during the Great Depression. In 1934, Chicago gangster Baby Face Nelson was killed in a shootout with two FBI agents in the Battle of Barrington.

Historic Architecture

Barrington Village boasts the largest residential historic district in Illinois. It has a profusion of Queen Anne and Victorian architecture from the turn of the century. The Octagon House, a residence built in 1860, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Catlow Theater, designed by Prairie School architect Alfonso Iannelli, is also listed on the National Register. The theater seats 700, opened for business in 1927 and is still going strong today. Boloney’s Sandwich Shop, adjoining the theater, offers freshly made food for in-theater dining.

The historic Ice House Mall was built by the Bowman Dairy in 1904 and was a functional ice house for almost 70 years. The turn of the century building was renovated in the 1970s and now houses local specialty shops.

Barrington Historical Society, located downtown, features a museum complex called “Old Barrington Center.” The historic exhibit contains a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop and a barn.

Parks And Recreation

Barrington has four public parks with tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds, baseball fields and a water park. There are also two golf courses in the village, and the Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve boasts a three-mile crushed gravel trail.
